A pesticide is a toxic substance intended to kill pests such as weeds, rodents, fungi, and insect pests.
The symptoms of acute pesticide poisoning are:
- headache, absent-mindedness,
- mental confusion,
- nausea, vomiting, diarrhea,
- peculiar breath odor,
- palpitations,
- respiratory depression: shallow breathing,
- irritability,
- eye irritation,
- skin lesions: ulcers,
- signs of blood in urine/feces.
Pesticides can enter the body in three ways:
1) Through the respiratory tract:
- when preparing pesticide mixture in poorly ventilated rooms,
- when handling pesticide-treated plants in poorly ventilated areas (e.g. greenhouses),
- without the use of personal protective equipment during pesticide treatment.
2) Through the skin:
- in case of skin contact with the pesticide during preparation of the pesticide mixture or during its application,
- in case of contact with pesticide-contaminated surfaces, tools or crops,
- when using contaminated clothing.
3) Through the digestive system:
- when eating, drinking or smoking while handling pesticides,
- as a result of touching pesticide-contaminated surfaces with hands and not washing up afterwards,
- in case used containers of pesticides after washing are used for drinking,
- eating pesticide-treated fruits or vegetables if they have not been properly washed,
- if you consume food or beverages that have been in close proximity to a pesticide-treated area and have not been covered.
Pesticides can be ingested by a breastfed baby through the mother's milk.
